Job Description

The Distance Learning Technician will be instrumental in advancing our regional educational community. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, collaborator, and advocate for innovation, committed to ensuring our students receive world-class opportunities to enhance student outcomes and lifelong learning.  Reporting to the Distance Learning Coordinator and collaborating closely with the participating school district leadership and all instructional staff, the Distance Learning Technician will create the conditions for student success in the classroom setting and as citizens in the future.

Salary: $55,000—$65,000

Position is anticipated to begin in August 2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities:

Collaborate in the development and implementation of distance learning programs, ensuring alignment with institutional standards and goals

Utilize expertise in distance learning equipment and programs, including video conferencing, to configure and troubleshoot regional equipment

Maintain and secure infrastructure and networks to ensure reliable connectivity

Install and configure audio-video equipment components in distance learning classrooms and mobile carts

Act as a liaison between vendors and districts for repairs and installations, including layouts, placements, recommendations, and coordination with vendors, districts, and the regional information center (RIC)

Oversee maintenance and provide recommendations for Distance Learning equipment and programs

Monitor and evaluate the performance and progress of distance learning programs and equipment, implementing necessary improvements

Administer Zoom video conferencing software to support regional staff and students

Offer technical support and training to faculty, staff, and students for the effective use of online learning platforms

Assist students, staff, and faculty in delivering distance and online learning to enhance students' academic achievement and development

Build and maintain relationships with component districts, community organizations, and stakeholders to support and enhance distance learning initiatives

Maintain an inventory of distance learning equipment

Set up meetings and provide support for video conferencing, virtual field trips, and other collaborative activities

Assist the Distance Learning Coordinator with grant applications and other funding opportunities as needed

Civil Service Job Description:

Distinguishing Features of the Class: The primary function. of this position is to assist in implementing and providing on-going support for video and other related e-learning technology services in ONC BOCES and participating component school districts. The work is performed under daily supervision of the Distance Learning Coordinator with administrative supervision by the Coordinator of ISS. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities (Illustrative Only):

Receives trouble calls on equipment and troubleshoots;

Travels to remote sites, provides supplies and performs routine/preventive maintenance on distance learning equipment;

Repairs equipment and replaces components to identify or remedy failures;

Assists the Distance Learning Coordinator with maintaining infrastructure servers; Management Server, Digital Recorders (2) & MCU Bridge;

Assists with virtual field trips and collaborations as needed;

Performs local and remote site testing on equipment to diagnose faults; Assists with test calls and connections as necessary;

Provides Server and system monitoring through TMS;

Communicates with vendors and other technical support personnel to aid in the solution of problems regarding distance learning hardware and software;

Sets up teacher's computer and test software to ensure that the entire system is fully operational:

Acquires and remains knowledgeable of the latest distance learning equipment;

Performs inventory and orders spare parts as well as strip surplus equipment for useable parts;

Attends conferences and seminars to keep abreast of distance learning technology;

Adds and removes end points from TMS; Tracks inventory of DL equipment;

Assists the Learning Distance Coordinator in developing visions and goals for the service.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Good knowledge of the use of video technologies and/or data communications systems, including distance learning networks; exemplary oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

Qualified applicants will meet the following minimum qualifications:

a. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's Degree or higher in Communications, media/television/film production technology or a related field AND two (2) years experience in coordinating, designing, installing, updating and maintaining video technologies and/or data communications systems demonstrating exemplary communication skills, customer services and training; OR

b. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND four (4) years experience in coordinating, designing, installing, updating and maintaining video technologies and/or data communications systems demonstrating exemplary communication skills, customer services and training; OR

c. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of "a” and "b” above.
